Since I was always writing “zeroes” I was really surprised that Google contains more pages with “zeros” than with “zeroes”.
This means more people are using word “zeros”.
As for the dictionary both forms are equivalent.
But I was wondering how I ever started to write “zeroes”?
Because I thought there is a general rule for words ending with “o”.
For example if there is a “hero”, you should have “heroes” but not “heros”.
I thought the same rule applies to zero.
Later I found that someone with name Gordon L. Burditt wrote a really nice description of the whole
process of choosing the correct form:
A zeroe is what you get when you subtract two identical colours. A zero is what you get when you subtract two identical colors.
The difference between a color and a colour is a genetic one (which tends to be divided by geography but isn’t always). Some people see in color, some people see in colour. Cheap printer inks are notorious for not having the same color as colour.
